چکیده

This paper presents a method to model and analyze the coupled nonlinear flight dynamics and aeroelasticity of highly flexible flyingwings. A low-order nonlinear strain-based finite element framework is used, which is capable of capturing the fundamental impact of geometrically nonlinear effects in a computationally effective formulation target for preliminary vehicle design and control evaluation. A simple model to capture the change in the wing torsional stiffness due to skin wrinkling arising from large bending curvatures is proposed. Finite-state unsteady subsonic aerodynamics with simplified stall models are incorporated to complete the aeroelastic representation of flyingwings. In studying theflyingwingdynamic response, a spatially and temporally distributed discrete gustmodel is introduced. With the proposed formulations, numerical studies are conducted based on a representative highly flexible flying wing subjected to finite disturbances.

Dynamics of Space Free-Flying Robots with Flexible Appendages

A Space Free-Flying Robot (SFFR) includes an actuated base equipped with one or more manipulators to perform on-orbit missions. Distinct from fixed-based manipulators, the spacecraft (base) of a SFFR responds to dynamic reaction forces due to manipulator motions. In order to control such a system, it is essential to consider the dynamic coupling between the manipulators and the base. Explicit d...

Flight Dynamics of Highly Flexible Flying Wings

The paper presents a theory for flight dynamic analysis of highly flexible flying wing configurations. The analysis takes into account large aircraft motion coupled with geometrically nonlinear structural deformation subject only to a restriction to small strain. A large motion aerodynamic loads model is integrated into the analysis. The analysis can be used for complete aircraft analysis inclu...

A Nonlinear Modal Aeroservoelastic Analysis Framework for Flexible Aircraft

We present a nonlinear formulation in modal coordinates of the equations of motion of a flexible aircraft. It relies on the projection of the intrinsic equations of geometrically-nonlinear composite beams on the linear normal modes at a reference condition, which are coupled with 2D unsteady aerodynamics. The resulting description is suitable for nonlinear dynamic analysis and control design, w...

Resonance of flexible flapping wings at low Reynolds number.

Using three-dimensional computer simulations, we examine hovering aerodynamics of flexible planar wings oscillating at resonance. We model flexible wings as tilted elastic plates whose sinusoidal plunging motion is imposed at the plate root. Our simulations reveal that large-amplitude resonance oscillations of elastic wings drastically enhance aerodynamic lift and efficiency of low-Reynolds-num...

Efficient Flapping Flight Using Flexible Wings Oscillating at Resonance

We use fully-coupled three-dimensional computer simulations to examine aerodynamics of elastic wings oscillating at resonance. Wings are modeled as planar elastic plates plunging sinusoidally at a low Reynolds number. The wings are tilted from horizontal, thereby generating asymmetric flow patterns and non-zero net aerodynamic forces. Our simulations reveal that resonance oscillations of elasti...
